Liezel Longboan

We can be more visible as immigrants. How? By learning how to write a press release, speaking beyond our community, and reaching out to local media. If the media won’t come to us, let’s go to them.

For many Filipinos and immigrant communities across the UK, the aspiration to gain voice and visibility in their new home is a powerful one. It reflects a universal need — to be seen, heard, and recognised for the contributions they make in their adopted countries. Migrant communities play vital roles in shaping the UK’s cultural, economic, and social landscape, and their stories deserve to be shared.

Did you know, for example, that the UK has been recruiting social workers from the Philippines since the early 2010s? Beyond Filipino nurses, carers, and engineers, the UK also relies on the skills of Filipino accountants, butchers, hospitality staff, and fishers, among many other professions.

Training information

“Be More Visible: How to Write a Successful Press Release”
📅 Date: Saturday, 7th December
⏰ Time: 11:00 AM
💷 Fee: £10/person – discounted rate from 30 November until 1 December 2024

Who should attend

👉🏽 Entrepreneurs, professionals, community leaders, and anyone looking to enhance their communication skills.

👉🏽 Ideal for beginners and those seeking to refine their PR strategies.

What you will learn

⭐ The key information that journalists are looking for in stories.

⭐ How to structure your message for maximum impact.

⭐ Common mistakes to avoid.

⭐ Practice what you’ve learned and write a short press release.

⭐ Get a hand-out to take away after the workshop.

⭐ Get a recording of the training so you can review what you’ve learned.

The workshop will be facilitated by ŷ founder and Content Director Liezel Longboan and experienced public relations and former journalist Anthony Jomel Gutierrez. Between them, Liezel and Jomel have 40 years experience as journalists, journalism educators and communication professionals in the UK and in the Philippines.

In this training, you’ll learn step-by-step techniques to craft press releases that media outlets will want to publish, helping your stories gain the recognition they deserve.

While we at are committed to amplifying these voices and covering events that showcase immigrant contributions, our limited resources often prevent us from attending all the events we are invited to. Currently, we operate without external funding and rely mainly on paid advertisements and marketing services to sustain our work.

That’s why we’re taking a different approach—empowering business owners and community members to tell their own stories. By learning how to write a press release, you can bring greater visibility to your events, products, and services, ensuring they reach wider audiences, including local media outlets.

Together, we can ensure that every story worth telling gets the platform it deserves. Let’s work towards a more visible and celebrated immigrant community in the UK.

is happy to announce that they are launching their new project: Film Screening Discussions featuring Liway, a 2018 Filipino independent film directed by Kip Oebanda.

The film is centred on the experiences of Dakip, the child of a prisoner of war, Commander Liway, who led guerilla groups within the Negros region. Through his eyes, we witness how his mother tries to give him a normal childhood against the backdrop of an extremely unconventional situation.

Sampayan Atbp. is an East and Southeast Asian intersectional collective focusing on merging advocacy, art practice and activism.

In the wake of the landslide election of Ferdinand Marcos Jr, son and namesake of the late dictator, the collective believes that it is vital for the Filipino diaspora to share stories regarding the violent events that occurred during the Martial Law era.

The screening will be on Saturday, 28th May at 2 pm at SOAS University of London. Following the screening, there will be a live Zoom Q&A with director Kip Oebanda. Sampayan sees this as an opportunity for the audience to discuss the importance of such movies, along with the Filipinx diaspora’s role in story-telling, along with other points of discussion.

This is a free event open to all, but the collective is asking people to donate however much or little, if they can, to keep this programme going. Please use the QR Link on the poster below for donations through PayPal.

This project is in collaboration and supported by: , ,
